UNIGIS at the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS

UNIGIS is offered by the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg. Z_GIS is an interdisciplinary Centre of Competence for Geoinformatics, integrating basic and applied research with graduate education and outreach activities. With more than 25 years experience in online education, the Department of Geoinformatics is internationally recognised for its flexible and innovative forms of distance learning. Moreover, our students benefit from the Department’s ample research activities, as they get involved with one of the leading competence centres for Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing in Europe.

Z_GIS research is centred along seven research areas, where methodological excellency in the conceptualisation of spatial thinking is integrated with domain knowledge in addressing today’s complex problems.

Besides its excellency in research, Z_GIS is recognised as a researchhub for graduate education in Geoinformatics with a distinct international orientation. As an Interfaculty Department, Z_GIS develops geospatial competences across disciplines, offering graduate study programs in residential as well as distance learning modes. A global network of partners from academia and industry serves as a strong platform for joint research and exchange of students and faculty – supporting the worldwide geospatial community and fostering awareness of the spatial dimension of social and natural phenomena.

Overall, capacity building and translation of research results into educational outcomes are a key element of Z_GIS’ strategic concept, supporting new insights through research as well as outreach to the GI community with highly qualified graduates.
