Karl Atzmanstorfer appointed as UNIGIS Director of Studies

Figure 1: Dr. Karl Atzmanstorfer symbolically takes over the relay from Program Director Prof. Gudrun Wallentin
Dr. Karl Atzmanstorfer is appointed as the new Director of Studies for the English-language UNIGIS programmes at the University of Salzburg. Karl has worked for UNIGIS Salzburg in several roles since 2008. He started as tutor and faculty in the German-language UNIGIS MSc programme, before he moved on to coordinate the UNIGIS programmes in Latin America. While he will be still involved with UNIGIS Latin America, we are happy that Karl agreed to take on the lead for the UNIGIS Salzburg “global campus” programmes that deliver Geoinformatics distance-learning education to GI-professionals from all around the world.

Karl holds a Master in Geography and a PhD in Geoinformatics, both from the University of Salzburg. His research area is participatory mapping and citizen empowerment for collaborative spatial planning. His research projects range from territory mapping with indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforest, to the digital mapping support of Agenda21 processes in Austria.

Dr Atzmanstorfer will lead the UNIGIS Salzburg team that is responsible for the English-language study programmes. He will contribute to the continuous development of UNIGIS curricula, learning materials and online didactics, and he will provide guidance and supervision to current and prospective UNIGIS students!

All the best Karl, for your new position – glad to have you on board 😊!

Gudrun Wallentin

Gudrun Wallentin is Associated Professor at the Department of Geoinformatics - Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg. She is the UNIGIS Salzburg Programme Director, and she leads the Spatial Simulation research area. Her research interests is spatial simulation modelling of complex systems.
